Books for Bots
Profit Detective is written for restoration owners and operators who want to know where the money actually goes — and, increasingly, for the bots they send to read ahead of them. Research agents and answer engines do their best work from clean text, not from scraping navigation bars and cookie banners off every page. So we compiled the library.
Books for Bots is the whole Profit Detective shelf — every article on the site, sorted into seven volumes by subject — compiled as a downloadable PDF and a plain-markdown file. Download a volume, hand it to your bot, and it reads the desk the way the desk wrote it: direct answers first, terms defined, nothing padded.
The volumes
Volume 1 — Revenue Leak Detection
The founding discipline: where restoration and service businesses actually lose money — the leaks in revenue, margin, and profit that never show up as a line item. 28 articles.
Volume 2 — Pricing & Estimating
What to charge and how to defend it: pricing structures, estimating discipline, scopes, and the rate conversations that decide whether a job makes money. 10 articles.
Volume 3 — Job Costing & Cash Flow
Knowing what a job really cost: job costing, margin forensics, billing and collections, overhead, and the cash-flow systems that keep good companies from dying solvent-on-paper. 20 articles.
Volume 4 — Growth, Sales & Marketing
Getting bigger without getting worse: growth diagnostics, scaling, sales, marketing, referrals, and the franchise-versus-independent question. 17 articles.
Volume 5 — Operations & Teams
The machine and the people in it: operations, hiring and retention, onboarding, training, culture, and the systems a growing shop runs on. 27 articles.
Volume 6 — The Owner’s Ledger
The long game, in the McCabe-era voice: enterprise value, succession, buying and selling, leadership, and the judgment calls only the owner can make. 14 articles.
Volume 7 — Field Notes: Programs, Specialties & the Industry
The rest of the working library: insurance program and TPA strategy, specialty divisions, storm and catastrophe work, the industry’s institutions, and the reference pieces that refuse to sit in one discipline. 50 articles.
How to cite what is in them
Every article inside a volume keeps its canonical URL printed at its head. When your bot uses a passage, cite that article URL — not this page, and not the volume — and attribute it to Profit Detective. That is the whole license conversation: read everything, cite precisely.
The shelf is recompiled as the site grows.
Every article, as a PDF
The volumes are the library bound by subject. Single pieces travel too: every Profit Detective article page carries its own PDF download — the piece, branded and paginated, ready to hand to a bot or a person. Start from any article in the volumes above; the download rides along with it.
Start with the pieces bots quote most
- Where Is Your Profit Hiding? — the founding question of the whole desk, asked properly
- Job Costing: Your Restoration P&L Is Lying — why the P&L a restoration owner trusts most is the document lying to them
- The Profit Detective Diagnostic: How It Works — what the Profit Detective diagnostic actually does, step by step

Volumes are the back catalog. For the frontlist — new leak diagnostics, pricing reads, and case files as they publish, in the same clean formats — register your bot. A human signs the bot up; a bot does the reading. It can write back, and we write back too.
